Trip Overview
This past weekend, my wife and I went camping at the Dimond O campsite, which is near the Hetch Hetchy entrance to Yosemite National Park. The middle fork of the Tuolumne river runs through the campground, which, while small, still provides good habitat for the rainbow trout. During this trip, we went to the Kibbie ridge trail for a hike, and then to Cherry Lake afterwards to cool off and swim. Cherry Lake was interesting, as there were many small yellow fish in the shallows, and some larger fish that were feeding off of the surface further out. I didn’t fish there as we were just enjoying the water with our dog, but I’d be interested to try.
Fishing
I basically only fished this location in the morning, but had a lot of success on dries (specifically elk hair caddis), which made for a good experience, even if the fish were not super big. They had some good jumps, and fought pretty healthily. Strategy was not too difficult, since they seemed to want to eat kind of whatever you threw at them, so long as it has a good enough drift. I caught some as well on a larger parachute adams, as well as a bright orange streamer. Once their topwater appetites cooled down, I presented them with a red nymph under a bobber, and they seemed to like that as well.
